Learn how to navigate with GPS

Hi, I’m Geoff Moss, a lifelong recreational adventurer who enjoys being in the hills. A wild-camper, hiker, occasional climber, mountaineer and paraglider pilot. I live at the edge of the Lake District National Park, home to England’s highest little mountains.

I love how easy it is to navigate with a smartphone or GPS device. However, if you’re new to electronic navigation then you’re faced with a bewildering variety of devices, apps and maps to use with this space-age technology. This website tries to provide enough information, in plain language, to help you find solutions to suit your adventures.

It should help a GPS newbie go from choosing a phone app, GPS handheld or GPS watch, through to accurately navigating a route in the worst possible conditions. GPS devices and smartphones make this relatively easy. All provide accurate navigation well away from any phone signals or internet access.

Electronic devices aren’t as reliable as a good old-fashioned paper map and compass. You should know how to use these and always carry them if your adventure requires good navigation to stay safe (help here). However, this website is focussed on navigating with GPS.

Mountain rescue teams are often called out to lost hikers. If you have a working smartphone navigation app or a dedicated GPS device and know how to use it, then it’s almost impossible to be lost.

I hope this site helps you have some great adventures, without getting lost 🙂
