About Nakarte.me
This is a great free manual plotter. It has all the maps you’ll normally need for the UK and many others for further afield too. Easy to use with some powerful tools behind the simple interface. No registration needed. Just start plotting. It works in a desktop or mobile browser.
It can export a single file that contains multiple GPX routes and waypoints.
Quickstart guide to the Nakarte plotter
This looks and behaves much the same whether you’re on a desktop computer or using a mobile browser on your phone.
- Choose the maps you might use – Click the settings cog [1], and click OK. The four pictured below provide great mapping options. From now on you only need the tools in the bottom RH corner.
- Start a new plot – Click the + symbol [2]. A ‘New track’ title appears below.
- Plotting your route – Click along your route until you get to the end. Don’t worry about it being perfect, you can go back and easily adjust it in a minute.
- To finish the plot – just click the last point a second time. It will turn red [3].
- Edit the route – click once anywhere on the line to reveal all the points. If you accidentally click away from the route all the edit points will vanish. No problem, just click once anywhere on the line to bring them back again.
- Move a point – drag it to the new position.
- Add a point – click on the line where you want a point
- Remove a point – double click the point.
- Extend a route at either end – Click the red or green end/start point once and carry on plotting. Click the last point a second time to finish the edit.
- Name your route – In the 3-dot menu [4] to the right of the track name, select ‘rename’ and name your route to taste.
- Save route as a GPX file – Use the same 3-dot menu [4] and choose ‘Save as GPX’. Save it to your local device. You don’t have a personal account with Nakarte and so you must look after any GPX files you want to save.
- To clear the map of clutter – Toggle the boxes on and off screen with the little arrows [5].
Share a route
- Share your plotted route – Use the 3-dot menu [4] and select ‘Copy link for track’. The link will be copied to your clipboard ready for you to paste into a text or email etc. The recipient of that link can see the route on the map and download the GPX file using ‘Save as GPX’ in the same menu.
- I’ve returned to routes months later and a ‘share’ link has still worked. However, I’d keep a local copy of the GPX file if you want to use it again.
Import a route
- Click the folder icon by the + symbol [2] and browse for the GPX file you want to import.
