About the maps
Harvey maps are a company providing good traditional-style folding maps designed specifically for walkers and cyclists. They look like paper maps but they’re printed on a tough waterproof polyethylene material and can be used in the rain without protection. Harvey Maps don’t cover the whole UK but there are maps, in different scales, for many popular adventurous locations.
Harvey also do mapping for parts of Africa, Canada and Greenland.
Electronic versions?
The UK Harvey maps are available in digital format but they’re not widely available like OS mapping. If you’re a Harvey map fan then you will have to get one of the few phone apps that offer the digital versions.
Currently Harvey maps are offered by the Outdooractive and Hiiker phone apps in their more expensive Pro+ subscription tiers. Check the Harvey maps website for the latest information.
Harvey maps vs OS maps
Some prefer Harvey maps to the OS mapping. The 1:25k Superwalker maps are the equivalent of the OS Explorer maps. The 1:40k British Mountain Maps fit more onto a map sheet. A single sheet covers most of my local playground, the Lake District. The 1:40k Trail maps will squeeze long multi-day hikes onto a single sheet or two.
